Other times, it will create a repeating sequence (such as the glider, pulsar, and spaceship from the preset dropdown). Sometimes an initial state will create an unpredictable, chaotic sequence. I strongly believe that - given the rules of Conways Game of Life and an initial configuration - it is not decidable by a Turing Machine whether a given pattern will emerge, let alone as a stable pattern, be it static, moving, and/or rotating. One interacts with the Game of Life by creating an initial configuration and observing how it evolves. Those 4 seemingly simple rules can result in wildy differing sequences. Game of Life, also known simply as, is a cellular automaton devised by the British mathematician John Horton Conway 1 It is a zero-player game 2 3 meaning that its evolution is determined by its initial state, requiring no further input. If a cell is dead and it has exactly 3 neighbours it becomes alive again.If a cell is alive and it has fewer than 2 alive neighbours, it dies of loneliness.If a cell is alive and it has more than 3 alive neighbours, it dies of overcrowding.If a cell is alive, and 2 or 3 of it's neighbours are also alive, the cell remains alive.A cell's fate depends on the state of its 8 closest neighbours (our grid utilises wrapping, meaning a cell on the far left is thought of as a neighbour of a cell on the far right, and the same principle applies at the top and bottom). The game is now ready to begin, and this involves advancing through time one step at a time. This is a cellular automaton comprising a square lattice of cells, each of which is either live or dead at any given moment in time. You can do this in the above example by clicking on squares, or by picking a preset from the dropdown menu. Before you start the game, you need to provide an initial state.
